Rayburn State of Play

Privacy is necessary because having access to footage of things people do can then be used against them. What makes invasion of privacy non-Democratic is when the government uses their surveillance abilities to then influence things like what candidate people vote for. It is an invasion of privacy when those things are then doctored to look like something else. Taking a photo of someone and making it look like they are stealing, when that is not the case. When surveillance is used to blackmail rather than protect, that is when it becomes invasive rather than an issue of public safety.

When Rachel McAdams' and Russel Crowe's characters take vide footage of Jason Bateman's character without his consent, that is a gigantic invasion of privacy. They could easily use that footage to the detriment of Bateman, which, one could argue, they did. When they show Ben Affleck the tape, he beats up Bateman, and that is the danger of taking footage of someone and using it against them without consent.
