The definition of a Democracy is a "government by the people," according to Webster Dictionary. That being said, if we as Americans, and as "the people,"cannot protect our privacy from the government because we do not have the power to do so, then that is definitely a huge hole in our so called "Democracy."
The helicopter at the beginning of State of Play shows how Point Corp is able to keep an eye on all of its targets. The camera angle looked upwards at the helicopter as if to say that we as the common people have no control over the monster surveillance company.
Working for Point Corp, the woman Mr. Collins had an affair was sent to spy on Collins by the corporation. Though the girl stopped giving information to Point Corp after she fell in love with Collins, it remains a troublesome issue to think that we could be spied on by people in some of our most intimate relationships.
Most celebrities and politicians, like Collins, have lost privacy due to sex scandals. The press in the movie ate up the story of Collins' acquaintance, with whom he had a threesome.
Surveillance corporations like Point Corp are created to make money, not for the common good of the general public, which is how they make themselves appear. This is a disturbing issue that that of which my generation will have to deal. All I can say is God Help Us.
