Peterson American History X

The movie American History X was an extremely powerful movie. Throughout the movie, there were many scenes that promoted Nazism/Facism to young teens. One of the reasons teens are attracted to thier ways is due to the fact that they can relate to these people because a lot of the characters in the movie are also teenagers. Also, many kids have been bullied and lived poor and unhappy lives just like the characters from the movie therefore they can relate to them. I believe the most powerful scene when it comes to promoting nazism and facism to young teens is the basketball scene. This is an extremely powerful scene. It shows the white guys struggling through a basketball game against the black guys. They are being beaten badly and have also been in a few physical confrontations. This scene shows Derek (the skinheads brave leader) step in and take control. He takes up for his peers and teamates and takes over the game. He brings them all the way back and eventually carries them to a win. I believe this scene especially catches the attention of young teens because of a few reasons. The first reason is because they are playing a popular sport. Many young teens enjoy watching and playing sports and seeing someone perform the way Derek did is very entertaining. Another reason, is because it shows bravery and leadership. Many young teens could possibly look at the way Derek took control and leadership and want to do the same. Lastly, it shows the white men winning and no athlete appreciates losing. There are many more examples of promoting Nazism/Facism throughout the movie but I believe this particular scene was the most important example.

  1. The basketball scene is extremely important to Derek and to Danny (as he recalls it) What does Danny say about the scene and the class/race conflict that is going on?
