Parker State of Play

A democracy is often described as a form of government derived from the people. As the Gettysburg Address states, we have a government "of the people, by the people, for the people". However, when large corporations are acting as individuals, they begin undermining the firm belief this country's government was founded on.

The one thing that large corporations can offer that individuals can't is money. The average individual does not have enough money to sway a government official.

In State of Play, Cal confronts Dominic Foy about the truth surrounding Sonia Baker's death. When Cal finds out that she was hired as a spy, he calls Stephen Collins and asks him who recommended Sonia to work for him. He reveals that George Fergus, a representative from West Virginia, did. When Cal hears this, it becomes clear to him. PointCorp payed George Fergus to recommend her so that they can spy on Collins.

This is a clear representation of how the money corporations have can influence different government officials. If corporations continue to act as individuals, then the government and the people who are supposed to be leading this country will be corrupt. That's not the type of people we want leading this country.

  1. Actually the Gettysburg address is quoting another important document. What is it? The paper trail in the film is well documented in your blog.
