Lighter - Good

The film Good takes place in the early stages of World War II. The main character John Halder is stuck in between good and bad, the good being his friendship with Maurice and the bad being the Nazis. At the beginning of the movie, John is presented as a “good” person and family member; he takes care of his children and his ill mother. John changes as the movie goes on, he leaves his wife for another woman and separates himself from his previous life and joins the Nazi life. The picture shows John and his new wife at the Nazi party and represents his new life he is living. This is where his father-in-law first reveals him for cheating on his wife. He criticizes him for pretend to be something he is not and John seems to be very affected by this. I think that the film is entitled good because it shows another side of the Nazis that most people do not even think about. In most cases, the thought of a Nazi is definitely not positive and most people would not even want to think of a Nazi as a good person. This is the main reason I think this movie was not distributed in the United States. Americans do not want to look at a Nazi and think that they were “good” people; most will immediately reject this thought because of the inhuman way getting what they wanted. This movie has a very different viewpoint from most World War II movies, and I think it is quiet successful in doing so.

  1. It took place in the thirties before the start of the war. You have not really done a mise en scene analysis of the frame. Discuss some specific elements. You discussion of why the movie was not distributed in the US is a bit vague.
