In my opinion, the hazing scene in the beginning of the movie describes George W. Bush very well. It shows many different sides of his personality. In the scene, it is very dark and gloomy with an exception of lighting on certain people every now and then. All of the fraternity brothers are hooting and hollering and hazing the incoming pledges. Then one of the leaders of the fraternity walks in the room and everyone quiets down. The leader begins to question the pledges to see if they are prepared to join the fraternity. This is where we see Bush. They ask him to name the brothers of the fraternity and pridefully he begins to list all of the names. The members are very impressed. They ask him if he is a legacy and once again, pridefully he says yes and starts naming his family members. These two instances shows that Bush is very big on pride. It also shows his loyalty to his fraternity. It proves that if he puts his mind to it and wants to do something he will be able to. They then proceed to ask him if he would like to be like his father and grandfather and become a member of politics and he tells them no way. This shows Bush's separation from his father and family. Throughout the movie they show more and more instances that show the relationship problems between father and son and this is a very good example. This also shows Bush's wild side from when he was younger. Then when the scene switches back to regular time, he is sitting and praying. This shows how he has made a change to become a good man. I chose this scene because in my opinion it shows all of his character traits and different personalities that make up George W. Bush.

  1. You have very mise en scene analysis. YOu do mention lighting, but you do not say why the way the scene is lit is important. You need to deal with different visual aspects of the film. Do not simply say what is going on.
