In the very first scene of the movie Good, John was portrayed as portrayed as a respectable man with good values who took care of his sick mother and looked after his children. In this scene he was cooking for his family when his father-in-law first introduced the idea of joining the Nazi party. The movie is named Good because it is about the internal conflicts of good vs. evil within certain members of the Nazi party and the transformation of their beliefs regarding what is good or evil. John originally was or at least he thought he was a “good” man, but the Nazi regime began influencing and dictating every part of peoples lives which slowly changed john’s life and maybe even his beliefs. The Nazis advocated the superiority of the Arian race, and Anne was the perfect specimen unlike his wife who was Jewish. I think john left his wife for Anne because of Nazi influence on some subliminal level in his mind. Along with abandoning his wife and children, he moved away from his mother and stopped caring for her. John constantly struggled to do what he thought was the right thing, but it was often very difficult.
When people in the United States watch a movie about Nazis, they all Nazis to be portrayed as evil sinister people set on conquering the world who are stopped from evil-doing by glorious American heroes. However, this movie suggests that there were good people, or at least people who tried to be good, who were members of the Nazi party. Mainstream America most likely would not accept this film very well.
The picture represents the ideal Nazi couple, with blonde hair and blue eyes, participating in society. They are what the Nazis believe are “good” citizens.
