Lanaux W.

The scene that best revealed the character of George W. Bush in the film W to me was the scene before his inauguration as Governor of Texas. W. hopes that his father will finally be proud and respect him. They have had a rocky relationship for a long time and George Bush Sr told W, "You disappoint me, Junior." Now that he has won the position he wishes to be respected; however, it is not the case. George Bush Sr. claims he's happy for him, but he talks more about his younger son Jeb's loss as Governor of Florida. When Sr. leaves, he hands W a note from him. W opens it to find a personal letter and cuff links that belonged to his grandfather. This scene shows W's character because he feels he finally deserves admiration from his father, yet he is still distant from him. The letter proves that W and Sr. can never have a loving relationship because Sr didn't present him the gift personally or read the letter that was filled with respect. He couldn't express his feelings to W face to face. W still feels worthless to his father, and this is a large part of his character. He is highly offended because for the first time in a long time, he is proud of himself and has accomplished something that would make his father very proud, yet W. is once again underappreciated by his father.

  1. You have no mise en scene analysis in this blog. Please reread the post on mise en scene and practice doing it. You need to ask what the dominant in the scene is, what type of lighting, character and camera proxemics, etc.
