Peterson The West Wing

Throughout the Pilot episode of The West Wing there were many different political issues. These issues included Cuban immigration, prostitution, an injured president, and religion. The main political issue from this episode was religion in politics. The entire problem with religion and politics started when Josh made an inappropriate comment to a lady that was a religious leader. She became very upset and Josh's job was in jeopardy. Due to this statement, the president had to get involved. He has to make sure he keeps church and state separate. Although he must keep church and state separate, because he is the president of the United States he must value the opinions of the Christian group and the public. Considering the situation this is a very tough task. Later in the episode, the religious issue comes up again when Toby gets in an argument with a delegation about the Ten Commandments. The president then joins in on the argument and supports Toby and tells the delegation to leave. He also decides not to fire Josh. He just gives him a warning and tells him not to do anything of that sort again. The president handles this issue very well. I believe all of his decisions were correct including not firing Josh. I also believe that he did an extremely good job by keeping church and state seperate.

  1. Your comment that the President handles the situation well is excellent. However, you do not say why religion is the most important political issue for this President. Why do you think it is. I want your perception of religion's importance in the episode.
