Bellelo The West Wing
In my opinion, the most pressing political issue the President dealt with in the pilot episode was members of the staff created crisis of their own. Sam brought home a law student and later finds out in the morning that she works as a high-priced call girl. Josh, the Deputy Chief of Staff, is having difficulty with his former lover Madeline Hampton, who now dates and works for a senator who is going to run for president. Also, rumors start to spread that Josh will be fired from office because of remarks he made on television. The remarks he made offended the Christian fundamentalist and Reverend Al Caldwell, a well known religious leader and Presidential ally. All in all, the entire White House staff went into complete chaos from the President's absence. On his return he had two major political issues to deal with. The crisis included a massive group of Cuban refugees headed for the Flordia coast, and the reaction of conservative Christians who were upset about the controversial comments made by Josh Lyman. The President sees through the mistakes Josh has made and keeps him in office. The crisis brings up the question of religion in politics. They do not mix well together, and if the president doesnt find a solution to compromise with everyone there will be a bunch of conflicts down the road.

The remarks offended Mary Marsh a good deal more since they were made on her television show, and it is she who insists on getting something for her embarrassment from the President. Good conclusion to your post.
