Peterson Inglourious Basterds

Throughout this movie i have many characters that i like, but the one that i feel played one of if not the most powerful role is Christoph Waltz. He plays Hans Landa a German officer that is very powerful. He was given the nickname Jew Hunter by the citizens of Europe. He is very good at what he does. He plays his role very well. His dialect in his scenes and they way he portrays himself just perfectly depicts the mood and feel of the scenes. My favorite scene of the whole movie and also in my opinion Waltz's best scene, is the very first scene. It starts by showing a French dairy farmer working in his yard. You then see vehicles coming from the distance and start to hear music. The first music you hear is Mozart. This is a German piece which lets you know that Germans are coming. When the farmer realizes what is going on he tells all of his children to go inside. He is then greeted by Hans Landa. At first he comes in and introduces himself and comes off as a nice guy. The lighting is dim inside the house. One can feel like something suspenseful is about to happen. The farmer then takes out his pipe and begins to smoke. In the meantime they switch from French to English. Hans Landa then pulls out his pipe which is much bigger and more elegant than the farmers. This shows that Landa is of a higher rank then the farmer. It shows his superiority and power. He begins to question the farmer about hiding Jews. Before he leaves he tells the farmer if he makes it easier on him then if he finds something the farmers family will not be harmed. The farmer then tells Hans that there are Jews underneath the floor boards. This is when we find out that the reason he switched to English is because he knew there were Jews down there. Before he gets his men they resume speaking in French and act like everything is okay. The music then changes as the Nazis come inside and begin shooting the floor boards up. One of the Jewish kids escape and he cannot get a shot on her because she is too far. Overall I personally think this is one of the most powerful scenes in any movie that i have seen before.

  1. I think you mean dialogue rather than dialect in his scenes. You have done no mise en scene analysis. You just say what happens in the scene.
