Innella, Inglourious Basterds

In Tarantino's film, Shoshanna Dreyfus is my favorite character. At the beginning of the film, Nazi Colonel Hans Landa visits a dairy farm in search for Jews in hiding. One of the Jews in hiding is Shoshanna. When the Colonel gets to the house, he explains to the owner of the home that he views Jews as rats. He says he cannot explain why he dislikes them, he just finds them repulsive. He then asks the homeowner if he is hiding Jews in his home. When the homeowner admits that he is hiding them under the floors, the Nazi come in and open fire to the house. Shoshanna ends up getting away from the Nazis and runs off to Paris.
While in Paris, Shoshanna runs a movie theatre. While working one night she meets Frederick Zoller, a celebrated Nazi sniper. Zoller soon falls for Shoshanna and has her taken to a lunch where she meets Nazi officials including Colonel Landa. While speaking to Landa, Shoshanna has a flashback of her escape from him. While at lunch, the Nazi officials propose that she has a Nazi movie premiere at her theatre. Shoshanna immediately starts planning revenge for her family by formulating a plan to blow the theatre up during the movie premiere. This would kill many high up Nazi officials. This is one reason why I really admire Shoshanna. Instead of running from the Colonel and the other Nazis, she confronts the situation head on and plans revenge. This shows great courage despite the incredible amount of risk that planning an attack on the Nazis can bring. Another side that you get to see from Shoshanna that surprised me was a sensitive side. When Shoshanna executes her plan, she shoots Zoller. As soon as she shoots him, you see that she suddenly is overcome with some sort of regret and sadness. Although Shoshanna gets shot and killed by Zoller, she died for her family and what she believed in, making her my favorite character in the movie.

  1. You need to do a mise en scene analysis to support your analysis of Shashonna's character and motivation. You only summarize the story.
