I vividly remember when my history teacher and good freind from back home first saw Inglorious Basterds. I asked him what he thought of the movie, and all he did was send me a slew of texts saying bizzare things such as, "The worst thing about fighting in a basement, is that your fighting in a basement." As this barrage of absurd statements left me perplexed and excited to see the movie, it wasn't long after my initial viewing of Inglorious Basterds that I relized that the rural brilliance of these quotes were all from a genuine badass...Lt. Aldo Raine.
Although I actually tend to agree with alot of the people who posted for the equally fabulous Hans Landa, there's something about the fearlessly raw nature of The Apache that makes him one of the more compelling characters you'll see in any film. This man is ridiculous. Raised, seemingly not by humans, but the byproduct of the feral forests of Tennessee. Although Aldo is a quote and linguistical machine, the screen presence that Bradd Pitt gives the Apache is full of life. For example, the first time we meet this lunatic, he's rambling about what his Basterds are going to do to the "Naatzis." "I want 100 scalps from everyone of you" barks the brazen Lieutenient as he moves freely amongst his men in rank and file. His role as the movement and dominating character in the scene sets a pretense for a man who will totally own every scene he's involved in throughout the movie. The unusual bright lighting sets the tone that these basterds, and their leader, are Jewish heroes, illuminaries of the Hebrew race bringing the hammer of justice to the Nazis.
Finally, I think its also reflective of the dominant nature Aldo has on the entire movie that in the sequence where he's actually pitted against his rival for best character, Hans Landa, he ends up making Landa into every other Nazi bitch he encounters.
Very original blog, but you do no mise en scene analysis. You have some excellent ideas about the3 first scene with Aldo, but you need to discuss the dominant in the scene, lighting, character proxemics, etc.
