Palmer I.G.
Inglorious Basterds is extremely different compared to Saving Private Ryan. Both movies deal with the World War II, however, the films are completely opposite.
Saving Private Ryan shattered the illusion of a "good war". This film focused on the human war. It personalized war and allowed the viewers to see the true sacrifice that Americans gave. Saving Private Ryan restored the sense that Americans fight for something just. The film sensitized people to the human loss. It seems that it would be "un-American" to find fault in Saving Private Ryan. I say this because the film pays homage to our veterans.
Meanwhile, Inglorious Basterds is somewhat of a spoof to Americas wars. Even though humor was incorporated into the film, it seems to prevail in highly unrealistic ways. The primary example would be the epic destruction of the Nazi high command. They are all burned in a theater fire and Hitler is shot hundreds of times by "the bear Jew". Brad Pitt's character is a walking punchline in itself. This film desensitizes Americans to war and turns it into some type of laughable circus act. However, once could say that the first scene shows Americans what they were fighting for.
In the picture posted, the lighting along with the dark colors of the uniforms and furniture create somewhat of a dark and ominous atmosphere. This is opposite of the mood presented by the characters. They present a joyous and unified appearance. No one seems to be particularly highlighted except for the actress and the gentlemen standing.

Did you read the article on American Triumphalism? How would you respond to that? Your mise en scene must be much more specific and must use the terms of mise en scene.
