Nguyen Inglourious Basterds

The most vivid character throughout the movie is Christoph Waltz, who plays as Colonel Hans Landa. He is the protagonist that makes the movie interesting and adds depth to the film. He is this manipulating, easy-going, cocky Nazi that is able to get the results he wants. He is a mastermind who plays his role as a detective far too well. His charisma and attention to detail is impressive and undeniable regardless of who he supports in the war. He plans ahead and is always aware of his surroundings. He pays close attention to detail and examines everyone's history who he may encounter in order to carry out his job effectively and efficiently. These are reasons as to why he is such an important character and my favorite character.
The scene that establishes his characteristics and defines him throughout the rest of the movie is in the very beginning. Colonel Hans Landa made a visit to Perrier LaPadite to investigate his home for any Jews. In the scene with Colonel Landa and Mr. LaPadite sitting at the discussing the matter, the colonel is placed at the head of the table while Mr. Lapadite is seated on the side. The colonel is also very calm and relaxed at the head of the table. He is constantly leaning back against the chair almost as if he is slouching. Mr. Lapadite, however, is sitting straight and very tense. The camera shows a medium close-up shot of the two talking because it is a personal conversation, which the colonel is trying to establish a connection in order to draw out any information Mr. Lapadite has on the Jews. The camera is focused so that the colonel is usually placed in the center or closer to the camera while Mr. Lapadite is placed mostly on the side and slightly further away from the camera than the colonel.
Overall, Colonel Hans Landa is the biggest bastard of them all.
